HMAS ANZAC, the lead ship, entered service in 1996. A “combined diesel or gas” (CODOG) propulsion plant enables the ship to sustain speeds of 27 knots and allows an operational range in excess of 6,000 nautical miles.
Each Anzac frigate is fitted with an advanced package of air surveillance radars, omnidirectional hull-mounted sonar and electronic support systems which interface with a state of-the-art combat data system
The ships’ main armament comprises one five inch (127 mm) gun capable of firing 20 rounds per minute, ship launched torpedoes and a MK 41 vertical launch system for the Sea Sparrow point defence missile. A helicopter is embarked to enhance its antisubmarine and anti surface warfare capabilities, initially an S-70B-2 Seahawk will be carried by ANZAC.
DSTO undertaking trailing and testing on behalf of the RAN of Glass Reinforced Epoxy piping systems for use on ballast and cooling water services for utilisation on all existing and new naval platforms operated by the RAN. Operational performance and testing of GRE piping have met all DSTO/RAN expectations to date.
Military active operations
Excelled during her deployment in the Persian Gulf in support of special forces landing operations during Operation Iraqi Freedom by shelling enemy shore positions.
