Project Overview

The City Beach Groyne and Lookout Tower is an Iconic landmark in Perth’s City beach. It was built in 1935 to control sand drift and help square the surf line to the beach.

VHMS constructed the new lookout top structure with Comptech FRP Profiles with the best performance capabilities and broadest range on the market of FRP, COMPTECH is the right choice to ensure the new tower replicates the original whilst offering the best lifetime value and safety in the harsh environment of City Beach.

Scope of work

  • Dismantling

Dismantling of the existing tower and canopy
  • Transport

Transport to the workshop in Jandakot
  • Mast Remediation

Sandblasting the mast, conducting NDT on welds, galvanizing and painting
  • Shop-fabrication

Shop fabrication of a new canopy using FRP materials
  • Site Installation

Mobilising, installation of remediated mast and fixing of the canopy
  • Demobilisation

Handing over of the works and demob

Perth’s City Beach Lookout Tower, an iconic landmark loved by residents and featured heavily still in tourism and social media, it was critical that a replacement could achieve a minimum of 35 years service life with little to no maintenance.

City Beach Lifeguard Tower was replaced entirely with COMPTECH pultruded FRP

  • With the best performance capabilities and broadest range on the market of FRP profiles
  • COMPTECH is the right choice to ensure the new tower replicates the original
  • Offering the best lifetime value and safety in the harsh environment of City Beach.

Project Challenges

In such a corrosive environment, the challenges were to go beyond traditional steel materials and to acquire an alternative solution that would outlast in these conditions.

  • Weather Conditions

With the tower situated at the far end of the beach, mobilising to site and deconstruction was impossible due to harsh wind and rain condition.
  • Tower Mast

Removing and refurbishing the tower's main supporting pole was a big job as it was filled with concrete over the course of previous repairs.
  • Like-for-Like

We need to make the entire tower as similar as possible. Matching all the colours to preserve its old look.

Solution Process

The works comprised of remediating the existing lifeguard tower at City Beach. The main activities and process that were carried out during the project were:

  • Deconstruction

Dismantling of the existing tower and canopy and transport to VHM warehouse
  • Tower Mast

Removing and refurbishing the tower's main supporting pole was a big job as it was filled with concrete over the course of previous repairs.
  • Mast Remediation Works

Sandblasting the mast, conducting NDT on welds, galvanizing, and using best anti-corrosion paints to withstand harsh conditions
  • Fabrications of FRP materials

Given the nature of FRP, shop fabrication of a new canopy, ladder and platform using COMPTECH FRP materials are visually maintenance free.
